나이가 어느 정도 들었다는 것은 자기 보다 젊은 사람들에게 유익이 될만한 지식을 가지고 입술로 잘 가르칠 수 있어야 하지 않나 생각한다. 그래서 그 젊은이들은 그 나이 드신 어른을 보면 '그래도 저 분에게는 그나마 배울점이 좀 있어'라는 말을 들을 수 있어야 하지 않나 생각한다. 그런데 그보다 더 중요한 것은 젊은 사람들이 나이드신 어른을 볼 때 '나는 저분을 존경합니다'라는 말을 들을 수 있는 것이 더 중요하지 않나 생각합니다. 어른들의 지식은 우리에게 지적인 배움을 줄 수 있지만 그 분들의 인품과 덕망과 지혜는 우리로 하여금 그 분들을 향하여 존경심을 주는 것 같습니다.
