الفصل السادس : إخلاء « الرياء » رأينا فيما سبق كيف ينبغي لنا أن نخلي ذواتنا من الكبرياء الذي يدفع الإنسان إلى رفع نفسه فوق الله، ومن الطمع الذي لا يكتفي بالله بل يطلب باستمرار أن يمتلك المزيد . والآن ننتقل إلى خطية عميقة أخرى، هي « الرياء » . الرياء هو الرغبة في أن نظهر أمام الناس بصورة تختلف عن حقيقتنا . فهو أن نحمل في داخلنا أفكارًا ومشاعر معينة، بينما نتصرف في الخارج وكأننا لا نحملها، وأن نهتم بتقييم الناس لنا أكثر من اهتمامنا بنظر الله إلينا، فنزيّن إيماننا بحسب ما نريد أن يراه الآخرون . لذلك فإن إخلاء الذات من الرياء لا يبدأ بمحاولة الظهور أمام الناس كمسيحيين أفضل . بل يبدأ بأن ننظر إلى حقيقتنا أمام الله بكل صدق، من دون أن نخفي شيئًا . قد نستطيع أن نخدع الناس . وقد نستطيع، إلى حدّ ما، أن نتحكم في الصورة التي يراها الآخرون عنا . لكن لا ينفع أي قناع أمام الله، لأن الله لا يرى فقط ما يظهر ...

While salvation is received through God's grace, as recipients of salvation, in order to live the life of a disciple, we must pay the cost. However, many Christians are unwilling to pay the cost of discipleship. As a result, they only build the foundation of faith and easily succumb to various temptations of the devil, living a life that transgresses against God, or becoming Christians who are ridiculed by worldly people (Lk. 14:29). The reason why so many Christians inevitably become objects of ridicule and mockery by worldly people is because they have not paid the cost of discipleship.
