Introduction [Unstoppable Spread of the Gospel (The Book of Acts)]

Introduction       It seems that anti-Christian sentiments are increasing.   Groups opposing the Church of Christ and persecuting it appear to be growing worldwide.   At the same time, there are reports of declining effectiveness in evangelism within the church.   The number of congregants is decreasing, and it's said that churches are closing their doors more frequently.   Young people are leaving the church, and it's becoming increasingly elderly.   The outlook for the church doesn't seem very bright.   What should we do?   We need to be filled with the Holy Spirit.   We must hold fast to the promise of the Lord and gather together in prayer, crying out to God.   We especially need to repent of our sins in accordance with the guidance of the Holy Spirit.   We must turn around.   And we must obey God's Word.   God's Word says, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and yo...

The unstoppable spread of the gospel (Acts 28:23-31)

Day 17: Acts 28:23-31         The unstoppable spread of the gospel.       Paul, with the hope of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, dedicated himself wholeheartedly to spreading the Gospel.  As a prisoner with no charges, he was brought to Rome and for two years, he stayed in his own rented house, boldly teaching about the kingdom of God and the Lord Jesus Christ to all who came to him (Acts 28:30).  During this time, there was no one to hinder Paul (v. 31).  Without any interference, he diligently testified about the kingdom of God and the gospel of Christ from morning till evening to the many who came to him (v. 23).  Some of the Jews who heard him believed his words, while others did not.  The disbelief of those who did not believe was due to their hardened hearts, dull ears, and closed eyes (vv. 26-27).  Ultimately, because of the unbelief of the Jews, God sent His salvation to the Gentiles ...

‘The word of faith we are proclaiming’ (Romans 10:1-15)

‘The word of faith we are proclaiming’       [Romans 10:1-15 ]                      We have already considered two things under the title of “The stumbling stone” centered on Romans 9:30-33.   Those two things mean that Jesus Christ became the stumbling stone (vv. 32, 33) to the Israelites who followed the law of righteousness (v. 31), while He became the steppingstone to the Gentiles who followed the law of faith (3:27).   In other words, we learned that Jesus Christ became the stumbling stone to the Israelites who relied on works and the steppingstone to the Gentiles who relied on faith (9:32).   We learned that the Israelites, for whom Jesus Christ was the stumbling stone, would be put to shame, and the Gentiles, for whom Jesus Christ was the steppingstone, would never be put to shame (v. 33).   After that, we were encouraged to live a steppings...

Let us not be ashamed of the gospel (Romans 1:15-17)

Let us not be ashamed  of the gospel.   [Romans 1:15-17]     What are you earnestly praying to God for as you write a letter of your heart to God?   My earnest prayer topic is to be used by God.   In particular, I have been praying that the Lord would use me as His tool like five loaves and two fish according to the words of John 6:1-15 when He called me during the college retreat in May 1987.   As I kept praying, ‘Lord, may You accomplish Your work of five loaves and two fishes through me,’ I became convinced that the work of five loaves and two fishes could be accomplished even through my life or my death.   So, I am not discouraged.   But I am praying, expecting, and waiting today as well.   With a heart longing to be used by the Lord in this way, I am praying more specifically to God: ‘Lord, please use me as a burning evangelist and comforter of your love.’   The reason I pray like this is because I want a heart that can...

Introduction [The Gospel, Living Worthy of the Gospel (The Book of Romans)]

Introduction     The time has already come.   The time has come when we Christians do not put up with “sound doctrine.”   Now we prefer to listen to the words of pastors who say what our itching ears want to hear (2 Tim. 4:3).   Even in such a situation, we pastors are supposed to teach the saints by saying only what is in line with sound doctrine (Tit. 2:1), but we are not doing so faithfully.   Perhaps the reason is because we are afraid that the saints will be bored and even hate it if we speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine.   Perhaps the reason is because we do not know sound doctrine and do not stand firmly on sound doctrine.   But we must keep in mind that the Bible tells us to speak and teach sound doctrine (v. 1).   Also, the Bible tells us to hold fast sound doctrine (1:9).   At the same time, we must teach sound doctrine to our church members (2:1).   Therefore, we must be able both to exhort in sou...

"What Is the Gospel?"

What Is the Gospel? W. Robert Godfrey 6 Min Read Many Christians, churches, and organizations regularly use the word  gospel  to describe their convictions. Theological controversies have occurred and do occur over the meaning of the gospel and who preaches it faithfully. What does that familiar word  gospel  mean? The best way to answer that question is to turn to the Bible. In the Greek New Testament, the noun  euangelion  (“gospel”) appears just over seventy times. Since, in one sense, the whole New Testament is about the gospel, we might have expected the word to have been used more frequently. Even more surprisingly, its use varies greatly among the authors of the New Testament books. Paul uses the word more than three times as often as all the other authors combined. Most of the other uses are found in Matthew and Mark, with very few, if any, in Luke, John, Peter, and James. The word  gospel  most simply means “good news.” The word is...
