Devotional Reflection Based on the Incident of Peter Cutting Off Malchus's Ear:

Devotional Reflection Based on the Incident of Peter Cutting Off Malchus's Ear: “Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.” ( Mark 14:47, Today's Korean Version ) 1. Identifying the People Involved: The person who stood beside Jesus and drew the sword was Simon Peter . The servant of the high priest was named Malchus . “Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.” ( John 18:10 ) 2. Jesus' Response to Peter's Action: (a) Jesus said: “Permit even this.” ( Luke 22:51, KJV: “Suffer ye thus far”; RSV: “No more of this” ) The Greek words clarify this: “ἕως τούτου” (“heōs toutou”) = “up to this point” or “even this” “ἐᾶτε” (“eate”) = “allow it,” “let it be,” “leave it alone” Therefore, Jesus is essentially saying: “Let them do what they are doing. Do not resist any further.” “If ...

The Holy Spirit-filled Christians (Acts 7:55-60)

The Holy Spirit-filled Christians       [Acts 7:55-60]     What is filled with the Holy Spirit?   This is what Pastor Andrew Murray said about filled with the Holy Spirit: ‘Without filled with the Holy Spirit, it is absolutely impossible for a Christian or the church to live and work as God desires.   Therefore, we must seek filled with the Holy Spirit with all our heart’ (Internet).   First, filled with the Holy Spirit means filled with Christ.     Look at John 16:13-14: “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.   He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.”   Wherever the Holy Spirit works, Jesus Christ is exalted and His name is testified.   When Peter and John faced persecution in witnessing Jesus Christ, they pray...

The stiff-necked Christians (Acts 7:51-54)

The stiff-necked Christians       [Acts 7:51-54]     What is stubbornness?  It is dogged determination not to change one’s attitude or position on something (Internet).  This word is used to actively present one's thoughts to other or is used to do what one thinks without listening to others.  The Bible Exodus 32:9 says that the people of Israel are “a stiff-necked people.”  What does it mean?  It is a metaphor for human stubbornness and foolish arrogance that does not obey God.  The word “stiff-necked” means obstinacy.  This reminds us a yoked cow.  When we try to yoke the cow, the cow has to bow its head.  But since the cow doesn't want to, the cow stiffens its neck.   In Acts 7:51 we can see the expression “stiff-necked”.  As we meditate on the four ways in which a straight-necked Christian is doing, I pray that if we are a straight-necked Christian, we will have the opportunity to repe...

Who are the true Christians? (Romans 2:17-29)

Who are the true Christians?     [Romans 2:17-29]         In A. W. Tozer’s book “That Incredible Christian”, there is a chapter called “The Importance of Self-judgment’ (Ch. 31) in which the author Tozer talks about seven rules for self-discovery about how we know that we are real Christians.   Although these seven rules may not reveal all about the real Christians, they will be partially helpful.   Why don’t you also reflect yourself on these seven rules (Tozer):   1.        What we want most. 2.        What we think about most. 3.        How we use our money. 4.        What we do with our leisure time. 5.        The company we enjoy. 6.        Whom and what we admire. 7.        What we laugh at. ...

Devout Christians (Nehemiah 12:44-47)

Devout Christians     [Nehemiah 12:44-47]     Do you not dream of a church built on love, where pastors embrace saints, holding them dear, and where pastors' hidden pains are held close to their hearts?   However, the reality for pastors is that 80 percent of adults believe they should meet higher standards of life than ordinary people.   Ironically, people think there are few pastors who can meet such expectations (Rubietta).   What are the expectations you have for your pastor?   They may vary.   But one thing is clear: We all must strive to build a church with understanding and love.   To do this, we must devout ourselves to each other.   We need to open our hearts to one another, engage in conversation, get to know each other, and pray for one another, sharing the love of the Lord.   Let us all show our devotion in this work.   Today, I would like to consider two things under the title of 'Devout Chris...
