“The most powerful weapon for silencing the mouth of the world is not brilliant theological apologetics, but the practice of a holy life that resembles Jesus Christ.”

“The most powerful weapon for silencing the mouth of the world is not brilliant theological apologetics, but the practice of a holy life that resembles Jesus Christ.”           “Now it happened, as Jesus went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath, that they were watching Him closely. And behold, there was a certain man before Him who had dropsy. And Jesus, answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, ‘Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?’ But they kept silent. And He took him and healed him, and let him go. Then He answered them, saying, ‘Which of you, having a donkey or an ox that has fallen into a pit, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?’ And they could not answer Him regarding these things” (Luke 14:1–6).       (1)     As I meditated on today’s passage, Luke 14:1–6, the phrase that first caught my attention was: “they were watching Him clos...

Have you received the Holy Spirit? (Acts 8:14-25)

Have you received the Holy Spirit?       [Acts 8:14-25]                      Here, we must consider the correct attitude towards the Holy Spirit.   Pastor A. W. Tozer advises in his book "Speaks to Students" not to grieve the Holy Spirit with a single word.   What causes one to grieve the Holy Spirit?   It is when we resist the guidance of the Holy Spirit dwelling within us, even though we may sense it.   Pastor Tozer says, ‘Cease immediately from any act of resistance against God.   Do not further resist what you believe to be right.   If your conscience enlightens you from the Word of God, do not go against it.   Follow the teachings of the Bible.   If we continue to resist the will of the Holy Spirit as expressed in the Scripture He has authored, it grieves the Holy Spirit’ (Tozer).   May the indwelling Holy Spirit guide us an...

The Holy Spirit-filled Christians (Acts 7:55-60)

The Holy Spirit-filled Christians       [Acts 7:55-60]     What is filled with the Holy Spirit?   This is what Pastor Andrew Murray said about filled with the Holy Spirit: ‘Without filled with the Holy Spirit, it is absolutely impossible for a Christian or the church to live and work as God desires.   Therefore, we must seek filled with the Holy Spirit with all our heart’ (Internet).   First, filled with the Holy Spirit means filled with Christ.     Look at John 16:13-14: “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.   He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.”   Wherever the Holy Spirit works, Jesus Christ is exalted and His name is testified.   When Peter and John faced persecution in witnessing Jesus Christ, they pray...

The Word became flesh (2) (John 1:1-4, 9-14)

The Word became flesh (2)     [John 1:1-4, 9-14]                      This is John 1:1 – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”   Here, “the Word” refers to Jesus Christ, God the Son.  The words, “the Word was with God” (v. 1), mean that God the Father is the only one, and God the Son is with Him.  The words “the Word was God” (v. 1) means that God the Father and the Son Jesus are equal to each other (Triune God).                   It is a rudimentary meditation on the triune God.   Although the word “Triune God” does not appear in the Bible, the Bible testifies that God is the Triune God.   The Bible says there is only one God: “Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one!” (Deut. 6:4), “Now a mediator is not for one party...

The mind set on the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:5-8)

The mind set on the Holy Spirit       [Romans 8:5-8]                        Look at Romans 8:5-8: “For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.   For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.”  Frequently used words here are “the flesh” (5 times) and “the Spirit” (3 times).   Here, we will meditate on only verses 5 and 6.                   In Romans 8:5-6 we read, “…   those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spi...
