다른 사람이 갚을 수 없을 정도로 빚을 진 상태을 알면서도 채무 불이행(defaults)하는 그 사람을 위하여 우리 자신 스스로 그 빚을 갚는 책임을 약속하는 것즉 보증을 서는 것은 어리석은 행동입니다(MacArthur).  
성경은 "지혜 없는 자"가 그 이웃 앞에서 보증이 된다고 말씀하고 있습니다(잠17:18).  그리고 성경은 "남의 빚에 보증이 되지 말라"고 말씀하고 있습니다(22:26).
