높임 받는 것에 중독된 사람은 자기 보다 더 높임을 받는 사람을 충분히 살인적인 질투의 눈으로 바라볼 수 있습니다. 하나님께 범죄하고 나서도 이스라엘 백성의 지도자들과 모든 군중 앞에서 높임을 받기를 원했던 사울 왕은 ( 사무엘상 15:30, 현대인의 성경 ) 블레셋 장군 골리앗을 죽인 다음 승리한 이스라엘 군이 돌아올 때 이스라엘의 모든 성에서 여자들이 승전을 축하하면서 " 사울이 죽인 자는 수천 명이요 다윗이 죽인 자는 수만 명이라네 " 라고 노래했을 때 얼마나 불쾌하였길래 그는 그 때부터 다윗을 계속해서 살인적인 질투의 눈으로 바라보았겠습니까 ? (18:6-9, 현대인의 성경 ) 이렇게 사람들 앞에서 높임 받기를 좋아하는 사람은 나보다 다른 사람이 더 높임을 받으면 충분히 질투할 수 있습니다 . 우리는 사람들에게 높임 받기를 좋아하기 보다 하나님에게 높임 받기를 좋아해야 합니다 . 그러기 위해서 우리는 예수님처럼 오직 겸손한 마음으로 우리 자신을 낮춰서 다른 사람을 우리보다 낫게 여기고 우리의 모든 특권을 버리며 종의 모습으로 이웃을 섬기는 삶을 살아야 합니다 ( 마태복음 20:28; 빌립보서 2:3-8, 현대인의 성경 ). 그리할 때 하나님께서 하나님의 때에 하나님의 방법으로 우리를 높이실 것입니다 ( 참고 : 빌립보서 2:9-11).
