Chapter 4: Emptying “Pride” Previously, we saw that Jesus Christ emptied Himself and took the form of a servant, and that the emptying of those who follow Him as disciples must be expressed through love and service. From this point forward, we will examine, one by one before the Word of God, the specific things within us that must be emptied. The first is “pride.” Emptying does not mean hiding the sin within us. It begins by exposing and acknowledging that sin before God. When we discover pride, we must bring it before God and turn away from it. We must expose, in the light of the Word, our desire for honor and recognition, our desire to rise above others, and our stubborn insistence that our own thoughts are right.
