하나님께서는 뜻을 돌이키셨습니다(욘 3:10). 니느웨 백성들이 행한 것, 곧 그 악한 길에서 돌이켜 떠난 것을 보시고 하나님이 뜻을 돌이키사 그들에게 내리리라고 말씀하신 재앙을 내리지 않으셨습니다(10절). 그러나 요나 선지자는 매우 싫어하고 성냈습니다(4:1). 그는 죽고 싶을 정도로(3절) 매우 싫어하고 성냈습니다. 그 이유는 하나님이 뜻을 돌이키셨음에도 불구하고 요나는 자기의 뜻을 고집했기 때문입니다. 요나의 뜻은 무엇이었습니까? "사십 일이 지나면 니느웨가 무너지리라"(3:4)였습니다. 그래서 그는 니느웨 성읍에서 나가서 그 성읍 동쪽에 앉아 거기서 자기를 위하여 초막을 짓고 그 성읍에 무슨 일이 일어나는가를 보려고 그 그늘 아내에 앉아 있었던 것입니다(4:5). 그가 기대한 "무슨 일"이 무엇이었겠습니까? 니느웨 성읍이 무너지는 것이었습니다(3:4).
