C. S. Lewis는 그의 책 “고통의 문제”에서 고통의 문제를 인간의 항구적인(지속적인) 죄의 문제와 깊이 연관되어 있다고 말하고 있습니다. 그러면서 그는 인간은 고통을 통하여 만사가 잘 돌아가고 있다는 환상에서 벗어나게 되는데 이것이 고통이 주는 일차적인 영적 유산이다 라고 말하고 있습니다. 그리고 고통을 통하여 인간이 나아가는 궁극적인 목표는 인간이 자신의 뜻대로 할 수 있다는 모든 주관적인 의지를 꺾는데 있다고 합니다. 이 때 하나님의 뜻은 인간들이 고통을 통하여 자신들이 부족하다는 것을 깨닫고 발견하여야 할 더 좋은 것을 추구하도록 하는 것입니다(인터넷).
