실제로 우리는 마치 요나가 큰 물고기보다 못했던 것처럼 벌레보다 못한 사람들입니다.
불신자 선원들을 도구로 사용하시사 요나를 바다 깊은 곳에 던지신 주님께서는 이미 큰 물고기를 예비하셔서 요나를 삼키게 하셨습니다(요나1:13-15,
17; 2:3, 현대인의 성경). 그리고 주님께서는 요나로 하여금 그 큰 물고기 뱃속에서 밤낮
3일 동안 있으면서(1:17)
주님께 부르짖게 하셔서(2:2)
결국에는 그로 하여금 “구원은 여호와께서 주시는 것입니다”라고 고백케 하셨습니다(9절, 현대인의 성경). 그리고 나서야 주님은 그 큰 물고기에게 명령하시사 그 물고기로 하여금 요나를 육지(해변)에 토해 내게 만드셨습니다(10절, 현대인의 성경). 이렇게 큰 물고기를 창주주 하나님의 명령에 순종을 잘하였는데 미련한 요나 선지자는 주님의 명령에 불순종하였습니다. 새 찬송가

“웬 말인가 날 위하여 주 돌아가셨나 이 벌레같은 날 위해 큰 해 받으셨나.” 그러나 실제로 우리는 마치 요나가 큰 물고기보다 못했던 것처럼 벌레보다 못한 사람들입니다. 그러한 우리를 주님은 구원해주신 것입니다. “내 지은 죄 다 지시고 못 박히셨으니 웬일인가 웬 은혠가 그 사랑 크셔라”(2절 가사).
