“헬라인이나 야만인이나 지혜 있는 자나 어리석은 자에게 다 내가 빚진 자라 그러므로 나는 할 수 있는 대로 로마에
있는 너희에게도 복음 전하기를 원하노라”(롬1:14-15). 여기서 ‘빚진 자’
해당하는 헬라어 ὀφειλέτης(오페일레테스)는 단순히 금전적 빚뿐 아니라 '마땅히 해야
할 의무', '책임', 나아가 '죄'까지 포함하는 넓은 의미를 가집니다. 즉, 갚아야 할 의무가
있는 상태를 나타내며, 복음의 빚이나 죄의 빚 등 영적, 도덕적 의무를
뜻합니다(인터넷). 바울이 “내가 빚진 자라”고 말한 이유는 그리스도 예수님이
죄인 중에 괴수인 자기를 구원(속량)하셨기 때문입니다(딤전1:15; 골1:14). 이렇게 많은 죄가 용서를 받은 바울은 주님을 많이 사랑했기에(참고: 눅7:47) 그는 할 수 있는대로 로마에 있는
