헤롯은 아기 예수님을 죽이려고 동방에서 예루살렘에 찾아온 박사들에게 "가서 아기에 대하여 자세히 알아보고 찾거든 내게도 알려주시오 ..."라고 말했는데, 대제사장들과 바리새인들은 예수님을 죽일 음모를 꾸미면서 "누구든지 예수님이 계신 곳을 알면 반드시 알려야 한다는 명령을 내렸"습니다(마태복음 2:1, 7-8, 13; 요한복음 11:53, 57, 현대인의 성경).  죽임을 당하는 위협 속에 계셨던 예수님은 우리를 살리셔서 영원한 생명을 주시고자 스스로 십자가에 목숨을 버리셨습니다(요한복음 10:15, 28; 요한일서 3:16).
