The Inseparable Love of God (1) [ Romans 8:38-39 ] Why can nothing separate us from the love of God? 1. Because God’s love is eternal. Romans 8:29a says: “For those whom He foreknew…” The word “foreknew” refers to before eternity began —before the creation of heaven and earth . The phrase “those whom He foreknew” does not simply mean knowing about someone intellectually, but rather loving them. In other words, it refers to “those whom God loved from eternity past.” Amos 3:2a says: “You only have I known of all the families of the earth.” If “known” merely meant intellectual knowledge, that would imply that God only knew Israel and did not know the other nations—which cannot be true, because the all-knowing God lacks knowledge of nothing. Therefore, “I have known you only” means “I have loved you only.” God loved Israel among all the nations of the earth. 사도 바울은 성도들을 위하여 기도하는 자였습니다(골 1:3; 엡1:16; 빌1:3-4; 살전1:2; 딤후1:3; 몬1:4). 기도하되 그는 하나님께 감사 기도를 드리는 자였습니다. 우리는 감사할 수 없는 상황에서도 하나님께 감사 기도드리는 그리스도인이 돼야 합니다. 그 비결을 큰 물고기 뱃속에서 하나님께 감사 기도를 드린 요나 선지자에게서 배웁니다(욘2:1, 9). 비록 그는 자신의 생명이 서서히 사라져 가는 죽음의 땅에 갇혀 있었지만(6-7절) 하나님께 감사 기도를 드릴 수 있었던 이유는 과거에 베풀어 주신 하나님의 구원의 은총을 기억했기 때문입니다. 즉, 그는 하나님께서 큰 물고기를 예비하시사 바다에 던져진 자신을 삼키게 하시므로 구원해 주신 은총을 기억했기에 하나님께 감사 기도를 드릴 수 있었습니다. 또한 그는 구원은 하나님께서 주시는 것을 믿었기에 하나님께 감사 기도(1절)를 드렸을 뿐만 아니라 하나님께 감사의 노래로 제사를 드리며 서약한 것을 지키겠다고 기도했습니다(9절, 현대인의 성경). 우리도 요나처럼 구원은 하나님께서 주심을 믿고 과거의 베풀어 주신 하나님의 구원의 은총을 기억하며서 감사할 수 없는 상황에서도 믿음으로 하나님께 감사 기도를 드리십시다.
