하나님께서 그리스도 예수님 안에서 우리와 맺으신 계약은 자유를 선포하여 우리를 죄의 종에서 자유롭게 하는 것입니다(참고: 예레미야 34:8,
현대인의 성경).
만일 우리가 하나님의 명령에 순종하여 죄의 종 노릇을 더 이상하지 않고 자유인답게 살다가 마음이 변하여 다시 죄의 종 노릇을 한다면 그것은 하나님의 명령에 불순종하는 것이요 하나님의 이름을 더럽히는 것입니다. 우리는 우리 자신을 다시 죄에게 종살이를 시켜서는 아니 됩니다(참고: 예레미야 34:10-16,
