갈멜산에 모인 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님과 바알 둘 사이에서 더 이상 머뭇머뭇하지 말고 둘 중에 하나를 선택하라는 엘리야 선지자의 말에 침묵하였습니다. 그들은 말 한 마디도 하지 않았습니다. 그런데 흥미로운 것은 바알의 선지자들이 아침부터 낮까지 바알의 이름을 불렀지만 바알로부터 아무 소리도 없고 아무 응답도 없었다는 것입니다(왕상 18:20-26).
