사도 바울은 골로새서 4장 2절에서 “항상 기도에 힘쓰십시오”(현대인의 성경)라고 골로새 교회 성도들에게 권면을 한 후 “감사함으로 깨어 있으라”라고 권면했습니다. 현대인의 성경으로 말한다면, 바울은 그들에게 “기도할 때 정신을 바짝 차리고 하나님께 감사하십시오”라고 권면을 했습니다. 여기서
“깨어있으라”,
현대인의 성경으로는 “기도할 때 정신을 바짝 차리”라는 말씀의 문자적인 의미는 ‘깨어있고, 엄격하게 주의를 기울이고, 영적으로 경계하면서 기도하라는 말입니다(KJV
성경 주석). 무엇을 영적으로 경계해야 하는가 하면 기도할 때 떠도는 생각(wandering thoughts)에 대해 경계해야 하며 또한 무관심에 주의해야 한다는 것입니다(KJV 성경 주석).
실제로
우리가 정신을 바짝 차리고 기도하지 않으면 충분히 별의별 생각이 들 수가 있습니다. 그러다 보면 우리는 모호하고(vague) 초점이 맞지 않는(unfocused)
기도를 하나님께 드릴 확률이 참 많습니다(참고: 맥아더). 이러한 기도는 하늘에 계신 하나님 아버지께 기도한다고 말하기보다
결국 “허공에다가 말하는 셈이 됩니다”(고전14:9, 현대인의 성경).
