The Inseparable Love of God (1) [ Romans 8:38-39 ] Why can nothing separate us from the love of God? 1. Because God’s love is eternal. Romans 8:29a says: “For those whom He foreknew…” The word “foreknew” refers to before eternity began —before the creation of heaven and earth . The phrase “those whom He foreknew” does not simply mean knowing about someone intellectually, but rather loving them. In other words, it refers to “those whom God loved from eternity past.” Amos 3:2a says: “You only have I known of all the families of the earth.” If “known” merely meant intellectual knowledge, that would imply that God only knew Israel and did not know the other nations—which cannot be true, because the all-knowing God lacks knowledge of nothing. Therefore, “I have known you only” means “I have loved you only.” God loved Israel among all the nations of the earth. 예수님을 팔아 넘길 사람인 가룟 유다가 대제사장들과 장로들이 보낸 많은 우리와 함께 예수님께 왔을 때 그 무리들은 칼과 몽둥이를 들고 왔습니다(마태복음 26:46-47, 현대인의 성경).
예수님께서는 그들을 보시 “내가 마치 강도라도 되는 것처럼 너희가 칼과 몽둥이를 들고 나를 잡으러 왔느냐?”하고 말씀하셨습니다(55절, 현대인의 성경).
저는 강도도 아니신 예수님께서 강도 취급을 당하신 것을 생각할 때 어쩌면 그 무리들의 배후 조정자인 대제사장들과 장로들은 예수님을 강도로 여긴 것이 아닌가 하는 생각이 들었습니다.
그래서 결국에 가서 그들은 예수님을 로마 총독인 빌라도 앞에 끌고 가서 고소한 후(누가복음 23:1-2, 현대인의 성경) 군중들을 조종하여 그들로 하여금 예수님을 “십자가에 못박으시오!
십자가에 못박으시오!”하고 외치게 하므로(21절, 현대인의 성경) 예수님께서는 진짜 “강도” 둘과 함께 십자가에 못박히셨습니다(마태복음 27:38). 그 와중에서도 구원자이신 예수님께서는 두 강도들 중 한명에게 “내가 분명히 말하지만 오늘 네가 나와 함께 낙원에 있게 될 것이다”하고 말씀하셨습니다(누가복음 23:43, 현대인의 성경).
