The Inseparable Love of God (1) [ Romans 8:38-39 ] Why can nothing separate us from the love of God? 1. Because God’s love is eternal. Romans 8:29a says: “For those whom He foreknew…” The word “foreknew” refers to before eternity began —before the creation of heaven and earth . The phrase “those whom He foreknew” does not simply mean knowing about someone intellectually, but rather loving them. In other words, it refers to “those whom God loved from eternity past.” Amos 3:2a says: “You only have I known of all the families of the earth.” If “known” merely meant intellectual knowledge, that would imply that God only knew Israel and did not know the other nations—which cannot be true, because the all-knowing God lacks knowledge of nothing. Therefore, “I have known you only” means “I have loved you only.” God loved Israel among all the nations of the earth. 예수님께서는 다 선지자들의 예언을 이루시려고 칼과 몽둥이를 들고 온 무리들에게 잡혀 가셨을 때 예수님의 제자들은 예수님께서 구약 성경의 예언의 말씀을 인용하신 대로 예수님을 버리고 모두 도망쳐 버렸습니다(마태복음 26:31, 56, 현대인의 성경; 참고: 스가랴 13:7, 현대인의 성경).
그런데 “모든 사람이 다 주님을 버린다 해도 저는 절대로 주님을 버리지 않겠습니다”하고 말한 사도 베드로(마태복음 26:33, 현대인의 성경)는 예수님을 멀찍이 뒤따라 대제사장 가야바의 집 뜰까지 들어가서 일이 어떻게 되어 가는지 보려고 했습니다(58절, 현대인의 성경).
아마도 베드로는 도망갔다가 다시 돌아와 예수님을 멀찍이 뒤따라 간 것 같습니다.
그리고 그는 예수님을 모른다고 세 번이나 부인했습니다(누가복음 22:57, 58, 60). 그가 세번 째로 예수님을 모른다고 부인하는 말을 미처 끝나기도 전에 닭이 곧 울었고 주님께서는 몸을 돌이켜 베드로를 보셨습니다.
그 때 베드로는 “오늘 밤 닭 울기 전에 네가 세 번이나 나를 모른다고 말할 것이다”라고 하신 주님의 말씀이 생각나서 밖으로 나가 한없이 울었습니다(60-62절, 현대인의 성경).
예수님의 말씀입니다: “그러나 누구든지 사람들 앞에서 나를 모른다고 하면 나도 하늘에 계신 내 아버지 앞에서 그를 모른다고 할 것이다”(마태복음 10:33, 현대인의 성경).
