"비록 하나님의 도우심이 함께 하지만 부양자가 할 수 있는 것에는 한계가 있기 마련이다. 하나님은 우리가 그런 한계를 뛰어넘을 것을 기대하지 않으신다. 물론 그런 한계를 뛰어넘으라고 압박하는 유혹이 있을 수 있다. 어떤 사람은 슈퍼 영웅이 되려고 애쓰는 반면에, 다른 이는 순교자 컴플렉스에 빠지기도 한다. 스스로에게 미안한 마음을 느끼면서 그들은 자신이 제공하는 돌봄이 주는 모든 기쁨을 잃어버리고 신체적. 감정적. 영적으로 완전히 맥이 빠지는 것을 느끼는데도 불구하고 고집스럽게 그것을 헤쳐 나가려고 한다. 그런 고갈된 상태에서도 혼자 그가 아직 감당해야 한다고 주장하는 것은 하나님께 영광을 돌리지 못하며 환자나 부양자에게도 최선의 유익을 줄 수 없다."
