물론 헤롯이 세례 요한의 목을 베어 죽인 이유는 자기 동생 빌립의 아내인 헤로디아의 딸이 연석 가운데서 춤을 추어 헤롯을 기쁘게 하였으므로 그녀가 (실제로는 그녀의 어머니인 헤로디아의 요구였지만) "세례 요한의 머리를 쟁반에 담아 제게 주십시오"라는 요구대로 잔치 자리에서 맹세하였기에 그리 행한 것이지만 실제로는 헤롯은 세례 요한이 자기가 동생 빌립의 아내 헤로디아를 차지한 것에 대하여 "당신이 그 여자와 결혼한 것은 잘못입니다"라고 말했기 때문에 헤롯은 세례 요한을 죽이고 싶었기 때문에 그를 죽인 것입니다. 그런데 세례 요한의 제자들이 와서 세례 요한의 시체를 가져다가 장사하고 예수님께 가서 이 일을 알렸을 때 성경은 이렇게 말씀하고 있습니다: "예수님이 이 말을 들으시고 혼자 배를 타고 조용한 곳으로 가셨다. ..."(마태복음 14:1-13, 현대인의 성경). 혼자 배를 타고 조용한 곳으로 가신 예수님의 마음은 어떠하셨을까 라는 생각을 하게 됩니다.
