10번째 재앙이 임했을 때 애굽 사람들은 "우리가 다 죽은 자가 되도다"라고 말하였습니다(12:33).  애굽 사람들이 자기들 뒤에 이른 것을 보고 이스라엘 백성들은 "애굽 사람을 섬기는 것이 광야에서 죽는 것보다 낫겠노라"(14:12)라고 말하였습니다.  그럼에도 불구하고 하나님께서는 이스라엘 백성들을 애굽 사람이 손에 구원하시므로 "이스라엘이 바닷가에서 애굽 사람들이 죽어 있는 것을 보"게 하셨습니다(v.30).
