The Inseparable Love of God (1) [ Romans 8:38-39 ] Why can nothing separate us from the love of God? 1. Because God’s love is eternal. Romans 8:29a says: “For those whom He foreknew…” The word “foreknew” refers to before eternity began —before the creation of heaven and earth . The phrase “those whom He foreknew” does not simply mean knowing about someone intellectually, but rather loving them. In other words, it refers to “those whom God loved from eternity past.” Amos 3:2a says: “You only have I known of all the families of the earth.” If “known” merely meant intellectual knowledge, that would imply that God only knew Israel and did not know the other nations—which cannot be true, because the all-knowing God lacks knowledge of nothing. Therefore, “I have known you only” means “I have loved you only.” God loved Israel among all the nations of the earth. "어찌하여 얼굴에 수심이 있느냐"고 아닥사스다 왕은 느헤미야에게 물었습니다. 느헤미야가 "병이 없"는데 그의 얼굴에 수심이 있는 것을 보고 아닥사스다 왕은 느헤미야에게 "이는 필연 네 마음에 근심이 있음이로다"라고 말했습니다. 느헤미야의 마음에 근심이 있음으로 얼굴에 수심이 있었던 것입니다. 그 이유는 느헤미야는 유다와 예루살렘 사람들의 형편을 들었기 때문입니다. 즉, 그는 포로로 잡혀 오지 않고 유다 땅에 남아 있는 사람들이 큰 어려움과 수모를 당하고 있고 예루살렘 성벽은 무너진 채 그대로 있고 성문을 불탄 이후로 다시 세우지 못했다는 소식을 전해 들었기 때문입니다(느헤미야 1:2-3;
2:2).
우리 주위에 사랑하는 사람들이 큰 어려움과 수모를 당하므로 우리 마음에 근심과 얼굴에 수심이 있을 수 있습니다. 그 때에 우리가 하나님께 간구하며 사모해야 할 것은 "내 하나님의 선한 손이 나를 도우시"는 은혜입니다(2:8:18). 그 이유는 우리 하나님의 선한 손이 우리를 도우실 때 "하늘의 하나님이 우리를 형통하게 하"실 것이기 때문입니다(20절).
