요압 장군은 다윗 왕에게 사울의 집안의 아브넬 장군이 헤브론까지 온 것은 다윗 왕을 속이고 다윗 왕의 모든 동태를 살피기 위해서라고 말은 했지만 다윗은 실제로 요압은 아브넬이 기브온 전쟁에서 자기의 동생인 아사헬을 죽였기 때문인 줄 알고 있었습니다(사무엘하 3:25, 30, 현대인의 성경).  지도자는 자기를 따르는 자들 중에 요압처럼 말과 마음의 동기가 다른 사람을 경계해야 합니다.
