We are taught that we must become upright people who, in God’s sight, are blameless and fully keep His commandments. “In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly” [(Modern Translation: “When Herod was king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah of the division of Abijah, and his wife Elizabeth also came from the family of Aaron. They were righteous before God and faithfully kept all the Lord’s commandments and regulations without fault”)] (Luke 1:5–6). 왜 우리는 그리도 잘 변하지 않고 있는 것일까요?
우리 사람들은 왠만하면 잘 변하지 않는다고들 말합니다. 그리 오래 교회를 다니고 있으면서도 목사님이 보기에도 우리는 아직도 변하지 않고 있다고들 말씀하십니다. 왜 그런 것일까요? 왜 우리는 그리도 잘 변하지 않고 있는 것일까요? 무엇이 문제일까요? 저는 그 대답을 로마서 12장 2절에서 찾아보았습니다: “여러분은 이 세상을 본받지 말고 마음을 새롭게 하여 변화를 받으십시오. 그러면 하나님의 선하시고 기뻐하시고 완전하신 뜻이 무엇인지를 알게 될 것입니다”(현대인의 성경). 우리의 문제는 마음을 새롭게 하지 않는 것입니다. 우리는 우리의 마음을 새롭게 하지 않고 있기에 변화를 받지 못하고 있는 것입니다. 그리고 우리는 변화를 받지 못하고 있기에 하나님의 선하시고 기뻐하시고 온전하신 뜻이 무엇인지 분별을 하지 못하고 있는 것입니다. 그러기에 지금 우리는 하나님의 뜻대로 살지 않고 계속해서 이 세상을 본받아 살고 있는 것입니다.
