사마리아 여인은 "유대인"이신 예수님이 상종하지도 않는 "사마리아 여자인" 자기에게 물을 달라고 하시니 이해가 되지 않았습니다( 4:9).  예수님의 제자들은 유대인이신 예수님께서  상종하지 말아야 할  사마리안 여인과 말씀하시는 것을 이상히 여겼습니다(27).
