The Inseparable Love of God (1) [ Romans 8:38-39 ] Why can nothing separate us from the love of God? 1. Because God’s love is eternal. Romans 8:29a says: “For those whom He foreknew…” The word “foreknew” refers to before eternity began —before the creation of heaven and earth . The phrase “those whom He foreknew” does not simply mean knowing about someone intellectually, but rather loving them. In other words, it refers to “those whom God loved from eternity past.” Amos 3:2a says: “You only have I known of all the families of the earth.” If “known” merely meant intellectual knowledge, that would imply that God only knew Israel and did not know the other nations—which cannot be true, because the all-knowing God lacks knowledge of nothing. Therefore, “I have known you only” means “I have loved you only.” God loved Israel among all the nations of the earth. 블레셋 왕 아비멜렉은 하나님께 복을 받아 창대하고 왕성하여 마침내 거부가 된 이삭에게 “네가 우리보다 크게 강성한즉 우리를 떠나라”고 한 것처럼(창26:12-16) 애굽 왕 바로도 하나님께서 아브라함에게 “네가 반드시 알아야 될 일이 있다. 네 후손들이 외국 땅에서 나그네가 되어 400년 동안 종살이하며 학대를 받을 것이다. 그러나 그들이 섬기는 나라를 내가 벌할 것이니 그 후에 네 후손들이 많은 재물을 가지고 그 나라에서 나올 것이다”라고 약속하신 대로(창15:13-14) 이스라엘 자손은 생육하고 불어나 번성하고 매우 강하여 온 땅에 가득하게 되어(출1:7) 애굽 사람들에게 400년 동안 종살이하며 학대를 받았고 결국에 가서는 하나님께서 내리신 10번째 재앙으로 인하여 애굽 나라에 모든 장남과 짐승의 처음 난 것이 모조리 죽은 후 모세와 아론을 불러서 “너희와 너희 이스라엘 자손들은 일어나 즉시 내 백성을 떠나라”고 말하되 이스라엘 백성들에게 빨리 그 땅을 떠나라고 재촉하였습니다(12:29, 31, 33).
