We are taught that we must become upright people who, in God’s sight, are blameless and fully keep His commandments. “In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly” [(Modern Translation: “When Herod was king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah of the division of Abijah, and his wife Elizabeth also came from the family of Aaron. They were righteous before God and faithfully kept all the Lord’s commandments and regulations without fault”)] (Luke 1:5–6). 요구한 것을 우리에게 주실지라도 ...
하나님께서는 우리가 요구한 것을 주시지 않으셔도 우리는 아무 할 말이 없습니다. 그 이유는 우리가 우리의 조상들처럼 범죄하여 사악을 행하며 악을 지었기 때문입니다(시 106:6). 우리의 조상들이 이집트에 있을 때 주님의 놀라운 일을 깨닫지 못하며 주님께서 수없이 베푸신 사랑을 기억하지 않고 홍해에서 주님을 거역했습니다(7절, 현대인의 성경). 그럼에도 불구하고 하나님께서는 자기 이름을 위하여 그들을 구원해 주시되(8절) 홍해를 마르게 하시사 그들을 인도하여 바다를 건너가게 하셨습니다(9절). 그리고 하나님께서는 그들의 대적들을 물로 덮으시사 그들 중에서 하나도 살아 남지 못하게 하셨습니다(11절). 그러나 그들은 하나님께서 행하신 일을 곧 잊어버리며 하나님의 가르치심을 기다리지 아니하고(13절) 광야에서 욕심을 크게 내며 하나님을 시험했습니다(14절). 그런데도 하나님께서는 그들이 요구한 것을 그들에게 주셨습니다(15절). 그러나 하나님께서는 그들의 영혼을 쇠약하게 하셨습니다(15절).
회개하지 않은 가운데서 욕심을 품고 하나님께 요구하는 기도를 하나님께서 응답해 주심이 두렵습니다. 그 이유는 그 기도 응답이 우리에게 "탐욕의 무덤"이 될 수 있기 때문입니다(민11:34, 현대인의 성경).
