산발랏과 게셈의 의도는 느헤미야를 암살하려는 것이었습니다 . 산발랏과 도비야와 게셈과 그 밖의 느헤미야와 유다 백성들의 원수들은 느헤미야와 유다 백성들이 아직 성문의 문짝을 달지 못했지만 성벽 재건 공사를 마치고 수리하지 못한 곳이 없다는 말을 듣게 된 후로는 산발랏과 게셈이 느헤미야게 전갈을 다섯 번이나 보냈습니다 . 그 전갈의 내용을 한 마디로 요약한다면 오노 평야의 한 마을에서 서로 만나자는 제의였습니다 . 그런데 그 제의의 목적은 사실 느헤미야를 해치기 위한 그들의 술책이었습니다 ( 느헤미야 6:1-7, 현대인의 성경 ). 즉 , 산발랏과 게셈의 의도는 느헤미야를 암살하려는 것이었습니다 . 아마도 그들의 생각에는 유다 백성들의 지도자인 느헤미야를 죽이면 더 이상 유다 백성들이 예루살렘 성문의 문짝을 달지 못하게 되리라 생각했을 것입니다 . 그들은 느헤미야와 유다 백성들이 예루살렘 성벽과 성문의 재건 공사가 완공되는 것을 원치 않았기에 느헤미야를 암살하려고 전갈을 다섯 번이나 보내 만나자고 제의를 한 것입니다 . 저는 이 말씀을 묵상할 때 교회의 원수들은 교회가 세워지는 것을 원치 않기에 ( 오히려 교회가 무너지는 것을 원하기에 ) 교회 지도자인 목사님을 공격하여 그로 하여금 그 교회를 떠나게 만들고 있다고 생각합니다 . 그리할 때 그 교회는 목자 없는 양 같이 여기 저기 흩어져 ( 열왕기상 22:17; 역대하 18:16) 고생에 지쳐서 기운이 빠져 있을 수밖에 없습니다 ( 마태복음 9:26, 새 번역 ).
