“We must ensure that no
innocent person is killed for murder."
The
chief priests and elders, who sought evidence to condemn Jesus to death
(Matthew 26:59), conspired to kill Him based on the charges of blasphemy
against the temple (verse 61) and blasphemy against His divinity (vv. 63-65). They then bound Jesus and took Him to the
governor, Pontius Pilate (Matthew 27:1-2).
Though Jesus was sinless (2 Corinthians 5:21), they considered Him a
sinner deserving of death and handed Him over to the Roman governor, Pontius
Pilate. Clearly, Deuteronomy 19:10 states, "… an innocent person should
not be put to death for a crime…," but they made the sinless Jesus into a
condemned criminal. Here is the verse
from 2 Corinthians 5:21: "God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so
that in Him we might become the righteousness of God."
