The Inseparable Love of God (1) [ Romans 8:38-39 ] Why can nothing separate us from the love of God? 1. Because God’s love is eternal. Romans 8:29a says: “For those whom He foreknew…” The word “foreknew” refers to before eternity began —before the creation of heaven and earth . The phrase “those whom He foreknew” does not simply mean knowing about someone intellectually, but rather loving them. In other words, it refers to “those whom God loved from eternity past.” Amos 3:2a says: “You only have I known of all the families of the earth.” If “known” merely meant intellectual knowledge, that would imply that God only knew Israel and did not know the other nations—which cannot be true, because the all-knowing God lacks knowledge of nothing. Therefore, “I have known you only” means “I have loved you only.” God loved Israel among all the nations of the earth. 하나님 아버지께서 예수님을 마음으로 싫어하셨을까요?
하나님 아버지께서 우리에게 베푸신 사랑이 얼마나 큰지 깨달아 알아가면 알아 갈 수록(요일 3:1) 우리는 하나님의 자녀로서 아버지 하나님께 순종할 수 밖에 없습니다(요 14:21). 우리가 하나님 아버지께 순종할 때에 하나님 아버지께서는 우리에게 상(reward)을 주십니다: "열매", "안전", "평화", 승리, "번성"/"창대", 등등(레 26:4-10). 그 상 중에 하나는 바로 하나님 아버지께서 우리에게 "내 마음이 너희를 싫어하지 아니할 것"이라는 말씀입니다(11절). 그러나 만일 우리가 하나님 아버지께 불순종할 때에는(14-15절) "재앙" 등 하나님께서는 "너희의 죄로 말미암아 내가 너희를 일곱 배나 더 징벌"(18, 28절), "일곱 배나 더 재앙"(21절), "칠 배나 더 치"실 것이며(24절), 우리의 수고가 헛될 것이며(20절), 열매를 맺지 아니할 것이며(20절), 등등, "내 마음이 너희를 싫어할 것"이라는 말씀입니다(30절).
저는 이 말씀을 묵상하면서 하나님 아버지께서 우리에게 베푸신 사랑이 얼마나 큰지를 다시금 생각하게 되었습니다(요일 3:1). 그러한 가운데 든 질문은 이것이었습니다: 하나님 아버지께서 우리를 "이처럼 사랑하사 독생자를 주셨"을 때(요 3:16), 하나님의 아들 예수 그리스도께서 십자가 상에서 "나의 하나님, 나의 하나님, 어찌하여 나를 버리셨나이까"라고 크게 소리 지르셨을 때(마 27:46), 과연 하나님 아버지의 마음은 "내 사랑하는 아들이요 내 기뻐하는 자"이신 예수님을(3:17) 싫어하셨을까? 과연 하나님 아버지는 십자가 상에서 독생자 예수님을 마음으로 싫어하시사 버리시기까지 우리를 사랑하실까요?
