죽을 것이었습니다. 그래서 그들은 이래도
죽고 저래도 죽을 바 에야 차라리 시리아군에게 가서 항복하려고 했습니다.
그들의 마음 자세는 “만일 그들이 우리를 살려준다면 다행한 일이지만
그렇지 않으면 죽기밖에 더하겠느냐?”였습니다. 흥미로운 점은 그들은 “죽기밖에 더하겠느냐”라는 마음 자세였지만 시리안 군들은 자신들의 “목숨만이라도 건지겠다고” 자신들의 천막과 말과 나귀를 진지에 그대로 버려 둔 채 이미 도망하였다는
것입니다(열왕기하 7:3-7, 현대인의 성경). 저는 이 말씀을 묵상할 때 이 예수님의 말씀이 생각났습니다:
“누구든지 제 목숨을 구원하고자 하면 잃을 것이요 누구든지 나를 위하여 제 목숨을 잃으면 찾으리라”(마태복음 16:25).
