The Inseparable Love of God (1) [ Romans 8:38-39 ] Why can nothing separate us from the love of God? 1. Because God’s love is eternal. Romans 8:29a says: “For those whom He foreknew…” The word “foreknew” refers to before eternity began —before the creation of heaven and earth . The phrase “those whom He foreknew” does not simply mean knowing about someone intellectually, but rather loving them. In other words, it refers to “those whom God loved from eternity past.” Amos 3:2a says: “You only have I known of all the families of the earth.” If “known” merely meant intellectual knowledge, that would imply that God only knew Israel and did not know the other nations—which cannot be true, because the all-knowing God lacks knowledge of nothing. Therefore, “I have known you only” means “I have loved you only.” God loved Israel among all the nations of the earth. 나는 요나 선지자와 같은 주님의 종입니다. 주님의 종 요나 선지자는 하나님의 명령에 불순종하여 함께 배에 타고 있었던 불신자 선장과 사공들을 위기에 몰아넣었던 반면에(요나 1:1-10), 주님의 종 바울 사도는 주 예수 그리스도의 복음을 전하다가 결국 로마 황제의 법정에서 재판을 받고자(사도행전 25:10-21) 다른 죄수들과 함께 배를 타고 이탈리아로 가다가 배만 아니라 그 배 안에 있는 모든 사람들(276명)의 생명까지도 위험하여 살아날 가망이 완전히 없어졌을 때 하나님의 약속의 말씀을 받고 그 모든 사람들을 안심시키고 결국에 가서는 모두 다 건짐을 받았습니다(사도행전 27장). 과연 나는 바울 사도와 같은 주님의 종인지 아니면 요나 선지자와 같은 주님의 종인지 자아반영 및 자아성찰합니다.
