 예수님께서는 "네 이웃을 네 자신 같이 사랑하라"고 말씀하셨고(마 22:39) 사도 바울의 이웃 사랑은 교회 안에서 믿음이 강한 형제가 믿음이 약한 형제를 기쁘게 하되 그 형제의 약점을 담당하고(책임을 지고) 선을 이루고 덕을 세우는 것입니다(롬 15:1-2).
