유대인들에게 죄수 하나를 석방하는 전례가 있는데 대제사장들과 장로들은 군중들을 충동하고 설득하여 성 안에서 폭동을 일으키고 살인한 죄로 갇혔있었던 죄수인 바라바를 석방해 달라고 빌라도에게 외쳤고 예수님은 “십자가에 못박으시오!

외쳤습니다. 실제로 석방되셨어야 할 분은 죄가 없으신 예수님이었고 십자가에 못박혀야 할 죄수는 살인자였던 바라바였는데 왜 정반대로 된 이유는 세상 죄를 지고 가는 유월절 어린양이신 예수님께서 십자가에 피 흘려 대속 죽으심으로 마땅히 형벌을 받아 영원히 죽을 수밖에 없었던 바라바와 같은 죄인인 우리의 모든 죄를 사하시고, 우리를 죄에서 해방시켜주시며, 우리에게 놀라운 구원의 은총을 베푸시사 우리로 하여금 영원한 생명을 얻게 하시기 위해서입니다.
