“너희 말을 항상 은혜 가운데서 … 하라”(골4:6). 이 말씀의 의미는 ‘영적이고, 건전하고, 적합하고, 친절하고, 예민하고, 목적이 있고, 칭찬적이고, 온유하고, 진실하고, 사랑스럽고, 사려깊은 말을 하라’는 것이라고 죤 맥아더 목사님은 말하고 있습니다(맥아더). 우리의 대화가 항상 은혜로워야 한다면, 그것은 예의 바르고, 겸손하고, 그리스도와 같아야 합니다. 그것은 험담, 경박함, 더러움, 비통함이 없어야 합니다(Believer’s 성경 주석). 우리는 남의 말하기를 좋아해서는 아니 됩니다. 조심하고 또 조심해야 합니다. 그 이유는 우리가 남의 말하기를 좋아하면 상대방에게 피해를 입힐 것이기 때문입니다. 그 한 예로, 우리가 남의 말을 하다보면 “다툼”을 일으킬 수도 있고(잠18:6, 26:20) 또한 “친한 벗을 이간”할(갈라놓을) 수도 있습니다(16:28).
