아버지 야곱은 자기가 특별히 사랑하였던 노년에 얻은 요셉(창세기 37:3, 현대인의 성경)의 피에 적신 옷을 보고
"내 아들 요셉은 찢겨 죽은 것이 틀림없다"라고 통곡하며 오랫동안
아들의 죽음을 슬퍼하였었기에(31-35절, 현대인의 성경)
극심한 가뭄으로 인해 굶어 죽지 않으려고(41:54, 57; 42:2, 현대인의
성경) 그의 10명의 형들을 이집트(애굽)에 곡식을 사오라고 보낼 때 요셉의 동생 베냐민은 그들과 함께 보내지 않았습니다. 그 이유는 베냐민에게 어떤 일이 일어날지도 모른다는 두려움
때문이었습니다(42:4, 현대인의 성경). 자식을 이미 잃어본 부모의 마음은 또 다른 자식까지 잃어버릴
까봐 충분히 두려워할 수가 있습니다. 그런데 나중에 두 번째 아들들을 이집트(애굽)으로 보낼
때에 야곱은 베냐민을 함께 보내면서 "내가 자식을 잃게 되면 잃으리로다"라고 말합니다(43:14).
