가나안 땅에 살고 있었던 기생 라합은 이스라엘 백성들이 애굽에서 나올 때에 하나님께서 그들 앞에서 홍해 물을 마르게 하신 일과 그들이 요단 저쪽에 있는 아모리 사람의 두 왕 시혼과 옥에게 행한 일 곧 그들을 전멸시킨 일을 듣는 순간 "곧 마음이 녹았고" 그들로 말미암아 "사람이 정신을 잃었"습니다(수 2:10-11). "요단 서쪽의 아모리 사람의 모든 왕들과 해변의 가나안 사람의 모든 왕들이 여호와께서 요단 물을 이스라엘 자손들 앞에서 말리시고 우리를 건너게 하셨음을 듣고 마음이 녹았고 이스라엘 자손들 때문에 정신을 잃었"습니다(5:1). 이스라엘 백성들은 아이 성에 백성 중 3,000명쯤 올라갔다가 아간이 하나님의 말씀에 불순종하므로(7:1, 11-12) 보기 좋게 패하여 아이군 앞에서 도망했을 때 "마음이 녹아 물 같이" 되었습니다(4-5절).
이방인 라합과 이방인 아모리 사람의 모든 왕들과 가나안 사람의 모든 왕들은 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성들을 위해 행하신 일을 듣고 마음이 녹아진 반면에 이스라엘 백성들은 이방인 아이군들이 자기들에게 행한 일로 인해 마음이 녹아 물 같이 되었습니다.
