하나님은 사랑이십니다(요일4:8, 16).  사랑의 하나님을 진정으로 알아가는 자는 하나님의 뜻대로 서로 사랑합니다(3:23).  그러나 서로 사랑하지 않는 자는 하나님을 알지 못하고 있는 것입니다(4:8).  그 이유는 하나님은 사랑이시기 때문입니다(8, 16).
