저는 "기드온" 하면 기드온과 그의 300명 군사를 생각합니다(삿7:8). 그 이유는 기드온의 300명 군사가 "메뚜기의 많은 수와 같"은 적군들(12절)과 싸워 승리했기 때문입니다. 그런데 제가 오늘 생각하게 된 점은 기드온이 미디안과 전쟁에서 승리한 후 "그 금으로 에봇 하나를 만들"므로 "온 이스라엘이 그것을 음란하게 위하므로 그것이 기드온과 그의 집에 올무가 되"었다는 사실입니다(8:27). 여기서 "그 금"이란 무엇입니까? 기드온이 "그 금"이 어디서 났길래 그 금으로 에봇을 만든 것일까요? "그 금"은 기드온은 이스라엘 사람들에게 그들이 미디안 전쟁에서 승리한 후 탈취한 "금 귀고리"를 자기에게 달라고 "요청"한 것입니다(24절).
저는 이 말씀을 묵상할 때 사무엘이 생각났습니다. 그가 온 이스라엘에게 한 마지막 말 중에 이러한 말을 했습니다: "... 내가 누구의 소를 빼앗았느냐 누구의 나귀를 빼앗았느냐 누구를 속였느냐 누구를 압제했느냐 내 눈을 흐리게 하는 뇌물을 누구의 손에서 받았느냐"(삼상 12:3).
