“ True Believers Like Wheat ” and “ The Wicked Like Chaff ” “John answered them all, ‘I baptize you with water. "18세기 미국 식민지 시대의 청교도 목사이자 신학자인 조나단 에드워즈는 "균형 잡힌 부흥론"에서 영적 교만의 위험성을 경고한 후에 영적으로 교만한 사람의 특징을 나열했다.
1. 다른 사람의 죄에 대해 신랄하게 비난한다.
2. 다른 사람의 결점에 대해 가혹하게 비난한다.
3. 자기를 독특하게 과시하고자 한다.
4. 자기가 다른 사람보다 낫다고 생각하여 자신을 다른 사람과 분리시키려 한다.
5. 자신에 대한 반대와 공격에 대해 아주 예민하게 반응한다.
6. 비난 당할 때, 비난 당하는 일을 더욱 열성적으로 한다.
7. 하나님과 사람 앞에서 너무 자만하다.
8. 자신이 주목 받고 존경 받는 것을 당연하게 생각한다.
