In our hard-working, highly productive culture, we can sometimes feel like exhausted swimmers swept downstream in a fast-moving river, fighting to keep our heads above water, gasping for air. We get up early and stay up late. We never waste a minute. Our schedule is full, running here, running there, running late, running to catch up, running on empty, until we collapse in utter exhaustion. Underneath the satisfaction of being hard-working, hard-playing people is a weariness that’s desperate for the pace to relent so we can rest and recharge. 평화롭게 잠드신 사랑하는 장인 어르신을 생각할 때 ...
고 오 덕겸 장로님, 나의 장인 어르신은 찬송가 "내 평생에 가는 일"을 좋아하셨다. 그런데 나는 지난 주 금요일 새벽기도회 때에서야 처음으로 이러한 질문을 던지게 되었다: '아니, 어떻게 돌아가시기 전까지 질병으로 그리도(내가 상상할 수 없을 정도로) 고통을 당하시고 계셨는데 그 찬송가 1절 가사처럼 "내 평에 가는 길 순탄하여 늘 잔잔한 강같든지 큰 풍파로 무섭고 어렵든지 나의 영혼을 늘 편한다"라는 고백을 찬양으로 하실 수 있으셨을까?' 어떻게 그 고통의 길이 순탄하다고 말할 수 있을까? 어떻게 그 고통 중에 "늘 잔잔한 강같"다고 말할 수 있을까? 너무나 어려우셨는데 어떻게 "나의 영혼을 늘 편한다"라고 찬양을 즐겨하실 수 있으셨을까?? 나는 평화롭게 잠드신 장인 어르신을 생각할 때 "평강"이란 단어와 함께 빌립보서 4장 6-7절 말씀이 생각났다: "아무 것도 염려하지 말고 다만 모든 일에 기도와 간구로, 너희 구할 것을 감사함으로 하나님께 아뢰라 그리하면 모든 지각에 뛰어난 하나님의 평강이 그리스도 예수 안에서 너희 마음과 생각을 지키시리라."
