“Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
“Have you believed because you have seen me?
Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have
believed.”
When
Jesus died, the centurion and those who were guarding him with him were
terrified when they saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, and
they said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!” (Matthew 27:54, Korean Modern
Bible). When Jesus was crucified, the
chief priests, scribes, and elders who mocked him said that Jesus believed in
God and that he “said that he was the Son of God” (vv. 41, 43), so it seems
that the centurion and those who were guarding him with him knew that Jesus had
said that he was the Son of God. However,
when they saw the earthquake and the things that had happened when Jesus died,
they said that Jesus was truly the Son of God. I am reminded of what Jesus said
to Thomas, who said that he would not believe unless he saw the nail marks in
Jesus’ palms, put his finger into the nail marks, and put his hand into Jesus’
side (John 20:25, Korean Modern Bible): “Have you believed because you have
seen me? Blessed are those who have not
seen and yet have believed” (v. 29, Korean Modern Bible).
