하몰은 자기의 아들 세겜을 야곱의 딸 디나랑 결혼시켜서 야곱의 모든 짐승과 재산을 자기 소유로 삼으려고 했었는데 결과적으로는 자신과 아들과 모든 주민들은 죽임을 당하고 야곱의 아들들에게 양과 소와 나귀와 성과 들에 있는 모든 것과 여자들과 아이들과 집 안에 있는 모든 것을 빼앗겼습니다(창세기 34:23, 27-29, 현대인의 성경).  물질이나 재산을 보고 자식을 결혼시키지 말아야 합니다.  물질이나 재산은 있다가도 순식간에 다 없어질 수 있습니다.
