형 에서가 야곱을 만나려고 400명이나 되는 사람들을 거느리고 오고 있다는 소식을 들었을 때 몹시 두려워하고 번민했던 야곱(창세기 32:6-7, 현대인의 성경)은 형 에서가 자기를
따뜻하게 반겨주므로 "내가 형님의 얼굴을 보는 것이 꼭 하나님의 얼굴을 보는 것 같습니다"라고 말했습니다(33:10, 현대인의 성경). 형 에서가 자기를 죽이려고 오는 줄 알고 도망갈 준비를 했던
야곱인데(32:8, 현대인의 성경) 이렇게 자기를 따뜻하게 반겨주고
또한 길을 안내해 주겠다고 하니 이것이 하나님이 야곱에게 베풀어 주신 은혜가 아니고 무엇이겠습니까! (33:11-12, 현대인의 성경)
