‘순종이 제사보다 낫다’는 말씀(삼상15:22)과 “나는 인애를 원하고 제사를 원하지 아니하며”(호6:6)라는 말씀과 무슨 연관이 있는 것일까요? 저는 이 질문을 던질 때에 요한복음 14장 21절 말씀이 생각났습니다: “나의 계명을 지키는 자라야 나를 사랑하는 자니 나를 사랑하는 자는 내 아버지께 사랑을 받을 것이요 나도 그를 사랑하여 그에게 나를 나타내리라.” 이 말씀을 보면 예수님께서는 예수님의 계명을 지키는 자라야 예수님을 사랑하는 자라고 말씀하셨습니다. 즉, 우리가 주님을 사랑한다면 우리는 주님의 말씀에 순종해야 한다는 것입니다. 이렇게 사랑과 순종은 연관된 것을 볼 때 ‘순종이 제사보다 낫다’는 말씀(삼상15:22)과 “나는 인애를 원하고 제사를 원하지 아니하며”라는 말씀(호6:6)의 연관성은 하나님은 우리에게 하나님께 순종하는 “인애”를 원하신다는 것입니다. 여기서 “인애”란 단어는 원어 히브리어로 “헤세드”로서 그 의미는 언약적 사랑과 충성(covenantal affection and loyalty)입니다(주석). 즉, 하나님이 우리에게 원하시는 인애란 언약의 하나님께서 우리에게 명령하신 계명을 충성되이 순종하는 사랑입니다. 이 순종하는 사랑이란 새 언약의 피를 흘리시사(마26:28; 히10:29) 우리로 하여금 새 언약의 백성들이 되게 하신 예수 그리스도께서 우리에게 주신 “네 마음을 다하고 목숨을 다하고 뜻을 다하여 주 너의 하나님을 사랑하라”와 “네 이웃을 네 자신 같이 사랑하라”(마22:37, 39)는 이중계명을 충성되이 순종하는 사랑입니다.
